OUR ENVIRONMENT
WE ARE PEOPLE OF THE LAND, CONNECTED WITH LAND –
WE SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY.
TŌ TĀTOU TAIAO
In 2011 in the lush green valleys of Mokai, north of Taupō, New Zealand, two Māori-owned organisations joined together to build the world’s first dairy-processing plant powered by geothermal energy. Their ambition was to use milk production to bring prosperity to the local community, while applying world-leading sustainable farming practices.
Right from the outset Miraka was better by design.
Kaitiakitanga acknowledges that we are all ‘naturally connected’ to each other, to the land and water, and to the birds, animals and trees. An impact on one has an impact on all.
Tikanga acknowledges that there is a natural balance to what we do. Our role is to find that balance. Connection (hononga), respect (whakaute), and unity (kotahitanga) are practices that Miraka associate with tikanga. As a result we do things differently – every day and every hour.

Today we are one of the world’s most sustainable dairy producers, with a low carbon footprint and a world-class farming excellence programme,
Te Ara Miraka
(The Miraka Way).
Miraka farmers lead the industry in land management practices.
Through our Te Ara Miraka farming excellence programme, our farmers are financially incentivised to strive for excellence in animal welfare, sustainable land management, people management, milk quality, and well-being.
By encouraging our supply whānau to apply environmentally sound practices we are helping create climate-resilient farms that produce some of the highest quality milk in the world.

HIRANGA WHAKAMAHI
WORLD-CLASS FACTORY
Miraka is one of just two dairy factories in the world powered by geothermal energy, using nature’s heat to dry and process our milk products.
We make milk, not waste. Milk that doesn’t make it through the production process is taken to a local worm farm, where worm castings are used to grow trees for riparian plantings. Water from milk processing is re-used in processing or for irrigation.
We connect with like-minded and like-hearted organisations that are looking towards the future.
Our aim is to produce the world’s best-tasting milk. To do that everything has to line up. We want the sweetest pasture, the happiest cows, the best farming practices, and the highest quality processing. We also want to care for our environment and build strong resilient communities.
By connecting all these parts together we produce a powerful product and a powerful story. We call this process of connection KAITIAKITANGA. It’s who we are and what we believe in – that’s our point of difference.
PARTNERSHIPS
We want to engage with customers and companies that are thinking about their world in 100-years’ time and care about the impact they are having now for the future. We like to think that Miraka is the ‘thinking person’s milk.’

KAITIAKITANGA

The Te Ara Miraka framework is good as it keeps you on your toes. It incentivises you to keep striving and stay focused right through the season, and new measures are added each year. The Miraka approach aligns well with our own philosophy on the farm. We firmly believe that if you look after the land and the animals, they will look after you.
