Māori-owned Miraka is well established in the New Zealand dairy-processing industry with strong values founded on the cultural beliefs of our owners. These values guide our business decisions and underpin the interconnected relationships we have with each other and with the natural world that sustains and nourishes our well-being.
Located in Mokai, 30km northwest of Taupō in New Zealand’s central North Island, Miraka is unique within the dairy industry. Using sustainable and renewable geothermal energy, state-of-the-art manufacturing processes, Miraka has the power and capacity to process more than 250,000,000 litres of milk into powders and UHT products every year.
The Miraka milk supply comes from 104 local farms within an 85km radius of the factory. This 85km sourcing radius gives Miraka farm-fresh advantage and results in superior quality products. Our range of quality products has a global reach to more than 23 countries.
Miraka is owned by a group of Māori trusts and incorporations. These organisations include Wairarapa Moana Incorporation, Tuaropaki Trust, Waipapa 9 Trust, Hauhungaroa Partnership, Tauhara Moana Trust and Huiarau Farms. Our strategic partners and investors include Te Awahohonu Forest Trust Limited, Vinamilk, a leading milk manufacturer and dairy products enterprise in Vietnam and Global Dairy Network who bring experience and knowledge in dairy sales and marketing internationally.
Miraka has an intergenerational view of business – we’re here for the long term and have a shared vision of sustainable business practices that ensure our future generations enjoy the benefits we do today. We are kaitiaki (guardians) of our land which will not be sold but passed on through the generations.
Protecting the environment, our natural world, in which we operate is of paramount importance to Miraka shareholders. We will ensure that future generations benefit from our work and that the footprint we create today does not adversely affect the future. The unique aspects of environmental care operating at Miraka include:
Miraka uses renewable geothermal steam from the Mokai geothermal field to run its processing operations – a world first for the whole milk powder processing industry. A number of monitoring bores around the property ensure there is no impact on the water table.
Biological waste created during the drying process is composted at the Tuaropaki Trust worm farm nearby. The worm castings in turn go to our local native plant nursery and these plants are used for riparian waterway planting.
Using these alternatives lowers the Miraka emissions of greenhouse gases. This is critical to our role as kaitiaki (guardians) of our environment and important to consumers around the world who look to buy products with a low carbon footprint.
The Miraka brand is represented by the face of a kaitiaki (guardian), body of Papatuanuku (Earth Mother) and Ranginui (Sky Father), which highlight our connected relationship with one another and our natural world. This symbolises the strong emphasis Miraka places on its responsibility as a guardian of resources. The Tauihu (prow) of the waka, is symbolic of our seafaring ancestors who set out into unchartered waters through the Pacific and onto Aotearoa/New Zealand, leads the way to new business opportunities and networks around the world.
The vision of 'nurturing our world', reflects a global outlook, and is founded on a strong set of values that will ensure sustained prosperity for present and future generations.
