Minister of Maori Affairs, Dr. Pita Sharples, has congratulated Miraka, a Maori owned milk processing company for entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with Shanghai Pengxin.

New Zealand's only Maori owned and controlled dairy company is signing a deal with Shanghai Pengxin on Tuesday to process milk from the former Crafar Farms into UHT products for export to China.

The owners of Miraka Ltd, an independently owned dairy company, are determined to capitalise on their first year of operation, which produced a profit.

Miraka, the Maori owned dairy processing plant near Taupo, will be operating at full capacity this season and it’s been having a major spring clean to gear up for change.

Wellington businessman Tim Gibson was appointed to the five person Miraka Board by the Maori Trustee following the retirement of the former Maori Trustee and Miraka board representative John Paki.

The performance of Maori farming has lifted as a direct result of the Ahuwhenua Trophy competition for excellence, says Kingi Smiler, chairman of the contest management committee.
